The only drawback seems to be the elastic cord, which could snap back and potentially harm a child, so we removed it. This is the second time I've bought these for my kids because they love them so much. They are great for travel and perfect for playing restaurant, taking orders, and so on. I first got them when they were ages 3 and 5. The pen holder broke on both of them, so we just bought new ones now that they are ages 5 and 7 because they still love this toy.

This was a gift for my grandson's birthday and he was very excited to use it. As a former teacher, I wanted him to develop the fine motor skills needed for writing. The issue began with the "pencil" provided as he didn't know how to hold it properly (we're still working on it). The pencil doesn't come attached to the board; it has a slot on top to place the pencil in and a springy cord that must be attached through tiny holes. I would have preferred it to come pre-attached. The colors were not as vibrant as pictured, but he had lots of fun with it, so I was happy. Good value for the price.

The string connecting the pen is not strong enough for toddler use; it has already broken. The writing surface is not very clear and defined, as the colors seem to melt together.
